Leiden (ライデン, Raiden?) is a country which is located in the southern middle part of the continental Telesis. It is the location that takes place in the Violet Evergarden universe, and where most of the story takes place.
Background
The war that the northern countries devoted to the southern countries of Tersys Continent rich in resources and crops has become a large and long-term involving the whole continent, contrary to speculation of the northern countries. As a result, each country entered a total mobilization regime and the labor force responsible for the national economy decreased sharply. Women were mobilized to make up for it, initially focusing on paperwork by volunteers. The military is a bureaucratic organization, a large number of documents is necessary for smooth operation. However, not only the army but also other government agencies and private enterprises needed the document work, and female recruitment was carried out one after another due to the shortage of men everywhere.
As the war prolonged, women's social advancement increased as they received higher-level but stricter education. As a result, excellent teachers, mainly elderly women, gathered in Leiden from all over the world. Facilities for instituting typing and instruction of document work were also created. Initially, the education period was only six weeks, but it had to be shortened to four weeks, then two weeks, since the demand for human resources from various places grew. However, when the war ended and soldiers come back to work, women's mobilization gradually lifted. Still, the reconstruction business alone had enormous work and the document work for the demobilized was massive, thus the women who got jobs were necessary everywhere. As a result, the military educational facilities were paid by the private sector and combined with the private consignment of government postal business, changing the appearance to the Auto Memories Doll Training School.[1]
